Same 35x45mm frame, different background and head-height rules

CountryBackgroundHead-height ratio
India (since Sept 2025)Pure white (#FFFFFF)80-85% of frame — tightened from 70-80%, among the strictest of any 35x45mm country
SingaporePure white (#FFFFFF)Roughly 55-78% of frame
United KingdomLight grey / off-white (HMPO recommendation)Roughly 64-76% of frame, chin to crown excluding hair
AustraliaLight grey or off-whiteRoughly 71-80% of frame; also accepts a slightly larger 35-40 x 45-50mm range
Schengen Area (29 countries)Light background — white common in France/Italy, light grey in Germany/AustriaFace (chin to crown) 32-36mm, roughly 70-80% of frame
JapanWhiteBoth ears must be fully visible in the frame — enforced strictly on passport and visa photos alike
Malaysia (note: 35x50mm, not 35x45mm)WhiteA slightly taller frame than the standard 35x45mm — do not reuse a Malaysian photo for a 35x45mm application without retaking
South KoreaWhiteFace fills roughly 70-80% of the frame, similar tolerance to Singapore's range
Canada (visa & some IRCC digital submissions)White or light backgroundA separate 35x45mm size from the 50x70mm Canadian passport print — used only for visas and select digital submissions, not the passport itself

A 35x45mm photo and a 2x2 inch (50.8x50.8mm) photo are not the same picture at a different scale, and cropping between them almost always produces a non-compliant result. 35x45mm is a 7:9 rectangle; 2x2 inch is a 1:1 square. Cropping the rectangle down to a square cuts off the top of the head or the shoulders, which directly changes the head-height ratio every country's rules specify as a percentage of the final frame — a photo correctly framed at 80% head-height in 35x45mm can overshoot past 95% once force-cropped into a square. The same trap runs in the other direction too: padding a 2x2 square out to a taller 35x45mm canvas leaves the head too small for any country's ratio, since padding adds frame without adding head. Treat the two sizes as separate outputs generated from the same original photo rather than converting one into the other, and always re-check the head-height percentage after any resize rather than trusting that the millimetre label alone guarantees compliance.

HOW IT WORKS

Three steps to a 35×45 mm photo

Step 1

Upload a photo

Any recent, front-facing photo works — the tool handles the background and framing for you.

Step 2

AI crops to exact size

Background is replaced with white and the crop is adjusted to the exact 35×45 mm frame, without altering your face.

Step 3

Download print-ready file

Your 35×45 mm photo is saved at 300 DPI, ready to print or upload for any application that requires this size.

Get the right background for your country, not just the right size

Upload a photo above, pick your country, and download a 35x45mm file with the correct background tone and head-height ratio already applied.

Upload errors & fixes

  • •Uploading a print-resolution 413x531px file to a portal with a higher fixed pixel count (like India's 630x810px) fails the minimum-size check — resize up rather than assuming 300 DPI is universal.
  • •A photo correctly composed for one country's head-height ratio can still fail another country's check even at the same 35x45mm size — always re-verify the ratio per destination rather than reusing a single crop everywhere.
  • •Printing at home without exporting at exactly 300 DPI first is the most common reason a "35x45mm" print comes out a few millimeters off — check the DPI setting in your printer dialog before confirming the job.
  • •A photo sized for one portal's digital minimum (Singapore's 400x514px) can still fail a different portal's fixed pixel target (India's exact 630x810px) even though both list "35x45mm" — the two specs are not interchangeable.
  • •Some print shops round 35x45mm to a "close enough" 34x44mm or 36x46mm — even a 1mm difference can fail an automated dimension check at a strict visa center, so confirm the exact trim size before accepting a batch of prints.
  • •A JPEG saved with the wrong colour profile (Display P3 instead of sRGB) can pass a manual review but fail an automated background-colour check, since the checker reads the raw pixel values rather than how the file looks on your own screen — convert to sRGB before exporting if your camera or phone defaults to a wider colour space.
