For domestic applications, white is the standard: JIM's automated processing is calibrated for a plain white background, and that is what every UTC/Imigresen counter expects. The traditional blue background survives only at some Malaysian missions abroad — if you are applying at an embassy or consulate, confirm the background colour with that specific office before you shoot.

Upload errors & fixes
- •Validator rejects the resolution — the portal checks against the 413x591px baseline; a photo shot at a higher resolution needs resizing, not just recompressing.
- •File outside the 100-300KB window — re-export at JPEG quality 75-85% to land inside the range.
- •ICAO facial-alignment check fails — the automated validator checks head position as well as background, so a slightly off-centre crop can fail even on a correctly-sized file.

Why you skip the printed photo at a JIM counter
Walking into a JIM (Jabatan Imigresen Malaysia) counter inside Malaysia, or one of the select overseas offices in Singapore, London, New York, Hong Kong, Melbourne, and Jakarta, means you never hand over a photo at all. Officers capture your image on the spot with the Facial Live Capture system, and the camera, lighting, and background are all controlled by the counter setup — the resulting image feeds directly into the passport chip.
That removes most compliance headaches for walk-in applicants, but it also means you have no say in how the shot turns out; retakes are at the officer's discretion, so plan your outfit and grooming before the appointment rather than after. Facial Live Capture only covers counter visits — anyone renewing through MyOnline Passport instead uploads their own digital photo and is responsible for meeting the spec above.
RULES TO GET RIGHT
Malaysia photo rules beyond the size
- Photo must be 35mm wide by 50mm high when printed, or 413×591 pixels at 300 DPI for digital use.
- Background must be white (#FFFFFF) for all domestic applications at UTC/Imigresen offices.
- Head height (chin to top of head) must be between 25mm and 30mm.
- Glasses are completely prohibited — including clear, non-prescription, and transition lenses.
- ICAO-standard neutral expression: mouth closed, both eyes open, looking directly at the camera.
- Wear dark-colored clothing — white or very light clothing blends into the white background and can cause rejection.
Baby / infant photo rules
For a baby's Malaysian passport photo, the same 35x50mm white-background format applies. The baby's eyes do not need to be open for infants, and no forced neutral expression is required. Photograph the baby alone on a plain white background with no toys, pacifiers, or hands visible.

Do
- Use a plain white background for every application channel — domestic, online, or overseas mission
- Wear a dark-coloured top for contrast against the white background
- Wear a dark tudung, hijab, or turban if required for religious reasons, keeping the full face visible
- Keep head height between 25mm and 30mm, chin to top of head
Don't
- Use a blue background for a domestic application — white is the JIM standard (some overseas missions still ask for blue; confirm with the mission first)
- Wear glasses of any kind, including clear or transition lenses
- Wear a white or light-coloured hijab that blends into the background
- Bring a printed photo to a JIM counter appointment — Facial Live Capture replaces it entirely
