Register the birth and obtain a certified birth certificate — every passport application below needs this document first, and it is usually the slowest step to arrange.

United States photo rules beyond the size
- Your baby needs the same photo size as an adult — 2x2 inches (51x51 mm / 600x600 px) for a US passport, 35x45 mm for the UK or Australia, and so on. There is no separate infant size.
- Your baby must be the only person in the frame. Even a fingertip, sleeve edge, or supporting hand counts as a second person and will get the photo rejected — this is the single most common reason baby passport photos are sent back.
- Closed eyes are accepted for infants in the US, UK, and Australia. Canada is stricter and prefers eyes open, though partial eye opening is tolerated for newborns. Check your country page for the exact rule.
- Use a plain white background with soft, even lighting. The easiest setup at home is a wrinkle-free white sheet on a flat surface with the baby lying face-up, photographed from directly above.
