Getting your Australian passport photo signed off
One of your two printed photos needs a stranger's signature — specifically, someone who has known you for at least a year, is 18 or older, holds Australian citizenship, and isn't a relative, partner, or housemate. They write "This is a true photo of [your full name]" in black pen directly on the back of the print, then sign underneath it.
That paperwork disappears for two groups: anyone applying online, where a referee replaces the guarantor and no photo is physically endorsed, and anyone renewing, where the current passport already proves identity. The signed print really only matters for a first-time paper application.
Glasses have been off the table for Australian passport photos since 1 July 2018 — no prescription lenses, no sunglasses, no exceptions by default. A narrow medical exception exists for conditions such as recent eye surgery or severe light sensitivity, but it requires a certificate from a registered medical practitioner, and applications using the exception tend to take longer to process. For the vast majority of applicants, simply removing your glasses before the photo is the fastest path through the process.

RULES TO GET RIGHT
Australia photo rules beyond the size
- Standard size is 35mm wide by 45mm high. The official acceptable range is 35-40mm wide by 45-50mm high, so a 35x45mm photo is always within spec.
- Head height (chin to crown) must be between 32mm and 36mm.
- Official guidance recommends a light grey or off-white background, plain and uniform — a stark, pure-white background is not the recommended choice, though it is commonly tolerated.
- Glasses are not permitted, with no exceptions, and a neutral expression is required.
- Two identical printed photos are required, and one must be endorsed (signed) on the back by an approved guarantor.
Baby / infant photo rules
Children under 3 are allowed to have an open mouth in the photo — this is the one expression exception in the Australian rules. The same background and single-subject framing rules apply, with no visible toys, bottles, or other objects in frame.

Do
- Use a plain light grey or off-white background — 18% grey is the officially preferred tone
- Keep head height between 32mm and 36mm, chin to crown
- Get one printed photo endorsed by an eligible guarantor for a first-time paper application
- Keep a neutral, closed-mouth expression (children under 3 may have an open mouth)
- Stick to 35x45mm even though the official range extends to 40x50mm, for the best compatibility if you need the same photo for another country
- Let a child under 3 have their mouth open if that is more natural — it is the one allowed expression exception
Don't
- Wear glasses of any kind without a medical certificate
- Use a stark pure-white background — light grey or off-white is the officially preferred choice
- Ask a relative, partner, or housemate to act as your guarantor
- Leave a toy, bottle, or another person visible in frame for a baby's photo
- Assume the guarantor step applies online — online applicants nominate a referee instead, with no physical endorsement needed
- Shoot against a patterned backdrop or outdoors — only a plain, uniform tone is accepted
